Nothing suggested I would become a computer scientist, apart from a mad desire to open up a PC when I was 10. My school curriculum was the complete opposite of computer science – it focused on horse breeding and animal welfare. At school, I was already the class IT expert – the one everyone called when the computer was running too slowly, or when the work placement report they were due to hand in in a month’s time had suddenly gone missing.
I could tell you that this course involving animals has given me qualities that are useful in IT, such as patience, observation skills and the ability to stay calm in unexpected situations, but the main thing is that an overheating processor has never kicked me, and that electric shocks from a PC are far gentler than those from an electric fence.
After my A-levels, I had absolutely no desire to carry on studying. So I looked for a job and was offered a role in geospatial data collection (like the Google Maps car that does Street View, but for a company in Nantes).
Through this experience, I discovered the very best in LiDAR technology and photogrammetry. Working with these cutting-edge tools requires extreme rigour and a deep understanding of bespoke systems.
Alongside this work, I decided to set up my own computer repair business in Nantes, with a view to eventually throwing myself into this venture full-time. Whilst this venture is certainly full of twists and turns today, that wasn’t the case at all when I first started out. Clients were few and far between, and that’s when I got into SEO – optimising my website’s search engine rankings.
Seeing the results I achieved so quickly, I decided to share IT tutorials and tips on my blog to help as many people as possible become more self-reliant in their day-to-day lives.
These days, I also manage the SEO for several websites and offer my IT services to private individuals, micro-businesses and SMEs in the Nantes area.
