What is a firmware flash?
Firmware flashing is a technical process used to reinstall or update an Android device’s internal software. Unlike a factory reset, which restores default settings without changing the base software, a firmware flash reinstalls or updates the device firmware itself. It is an advanced factory reinstall: settings and data can be erased, and the operating system is replaced or updated.
Why flash an Android smartphone firmware?
Flashing replaces the current internal software with a new version to fix bugs, improve performance or install a modified operating system such as a custom ROM.

Install a modified system (custom ROM)
A custom ROM is a modified Android system created by third-party developers and installed instead of the manufacturer’s original ROM. ROM means Read-Only Memory, but in Android it commonly refers to the operating system itself.
Custom ROMs provide extra features, performance optimisations and sometimes better battery management. They appeal to advanced Android users who want to go beyond the manufacturer’s restrictions.

Install a modified custom recovery
A custom recovery is a modified version of Android’s built-in recovery environment. It is a separate partition used for maintenance and troubleshooting without fully starting Android. Custom recoveries add features such as:
- Installing custom ROMs: install alternative Android versions.
- Rooting the device: install files that provide administrator access.
- Advanced wiping and formatting: erase user data, cache, Dalvik cache or the system partition.
- Installing mods and patches: apply custom kernels and other enhancements.
The two best-known custom recoveries are TWRP (Team Win Recovery Project) and ClockworkMod (CWM).
