Proton VPN Free: an ethical and secure Swiss service
Proton VPN Free is the free version of the VPN developed by Proton AG, the Swiss company behind Proton Mail. The business specialises in online privacy protection and is based in Geneva, under Swiss data-protection law.
Unlike free VPNs funded through intrusive adverts or the resale of personal data, Proton uses a transparent model: subscriptions finance the free service. The free plan therefore retains the same core privacy protections and encryption technologies as the paid version.
The main difference is straightforward: unlimited bandwidth, no adverts and no browsing logs. You can use the service for as long as required without a monthly data allowance. This makes it one of the few free VPNs we can recommend for public Wi-Fi, everyday browsing and bypassing basic network censorship.
What does Proton VPN Free include?
Proton VPN Free imposes no time or data limit. It provides medium-speed access and automatically connects to the fastest suitable free server. Proton currently operates free servers in ten countries: the Netherlands, Japan, Romania, Poland, Norway, Switzerland, Singapore, Mexico, Canada and the United States.
You can request another server, but the application selects the new destination at random. A cooldown starts after each change and becomes longer after repeated requests. One free account protects one device at a time. P2P traffic, guaranteed streaming access, NetShield, Secure Core and direct access to the complete server network require a paid plan.
For normal browsing, email, video calls, IP masking and protection on public Wi-Fi, the free version remains generous and easy to use.
Security, encryption and privacy policy
The free plan uses the same core security standards as Proton’s paid plans. The applications support modern protocols and include protection designed to prevent DNS or IP leaks if the VPN connection becomes unstable.
- OpenVPN (UDP/TCP): a mature, open-source protocol using strong AES-256 encryption.
- WireGuard: a modern and lightweight protocol based on ChaCha20 encryption.
- Stealth: Proton’s obfuscated protocol, designed to disguise VPN traffic on restrictive networks.
No-logs policy and independent checks
Proton VPN applies an independently audited no-logs policy. It does not retain browsing activity, connection timestamps or users’ source IP addresses. Its applications are open source, allowing researchers to inspect their code.
Proton has held ISO 27001 certification since 2024 and obtained a SOC 2 Type II attestation in 2025. These frameworks assess how security controls are organised and whether they operate effectively over time. The company’s Swiss jurisdiction provides an additional legal framework for privacy.
Network protection and Kill Switch
DNS and IPv6 leak protections keep requests inside the encrypted tunnel. The free application also includes a Kill Switch, which blocks internet traffic if the VPN disconnects unexpectedly so that the real IP address is not exposed.
Our real-world Proton VPN Free speed test
We tested Proton VPN Free from a fibre connection in Nantes, France, using a free server in the Netherlands. Without the VPN, the line reached 867 Mbps download, 327 Mbps upload and a 17 ms ping.
With Proton VPN Free enabled, we measured 506 Mbps download, 171 Mbps upload and a 49 ms ping. The reduction is noticeable, but the connection remained responsive and stable for a completely free service.
That represents approximately 58% of the original download speed and 52% of the upload speed. The ping almost tripled, yet remained adequate for browsing, calls and ordinary video playback.
During repeated Speedtest runs, we observed a severe slowdown after roughly 1 GB of cumulative transferred data on the same free Dutch server. This is a test observation rather than an advertised monthly data cap: Proton officially provides unlimited data, while server load and fair-use management may still affect speed.

The free plan already covers secure browsing, email, video calls and public Wi-Fi without a data allowance. Plus is required for P2P, reliable access to supported streaming services, more devices, direct access to the worldwide server network and advanced tools such as NetShield and Secure Core.
A business model built around privacy
Paid Plus and Unlimited subscriptions finance development, infrastructure and maintenance for free users. This model allows Proton to provide a free VPN without advertising or selling browsing data. Since 2024, the company has been overseen by the non-profit Proton Foundation, whose stated mission is to defend online privacy and digital freedom.

Proton VPN Free is one of the most credible free VPNs available. It combines unlimited data, no advertising, open-source applications, strong encryption and an audited no-logs policy. The interface is clear enough for beginners while retaining useful technical controls.
It is best suited to secure browsing, public Wi-Fi and basic IP masking. One device, random server selection, no P2P and no guaranteed streaming are meaningful restrictions, but they separate the free service from Plus without weakening its basic privacy protection. Remember that a VPN masks your IP address but does not, by itself, prevent browser fingerprinting or make you completely anonymous.
